Dear Friends,
It has finally begun!
We are leading our own trips to a few select places on earth for a few select people. Our first trip is designed primarily for photography and for a leisurely-paced passage through one of the most spectacularly beautiful places on earth - a two week exploration of the famous Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska.
We have chartered a 65 foot yacht for 5 people that will carry us into narrow fjords in search of brown and black bears, nesting sites of bald eagles, tufted and horned puffins, sea otters, orca and humpback whales. Our planned itinerary allows time for anchoring overnight in secluded coves as well as walks on shore at our own pace to explore the largest remaining temperate rain forest of the world. At this time of year the sun is at its zenith, so we will have long hours of daylight and twilight. At this latitude twilight paints the mountain peaks with a kaleidoscope of colors known as alpenglow… this early in the season there is still plenty of snow at upper elevations!

We will have crab pots to throw overboard while at anchor as well as fishing tackle. Kayaks and a small run-about provide opportunities for exploring. Wildflowers of the forest and muskeg bog are at their peak for close-up photography.

It is absolutely the best time to explore the thousands of islands that make up the Alexander Archipelago of Alaska.

APRIL 2001
In Search of Blue Whales, the Sea of Cortez

This trip utilizes the port facilities of La Paz, Mexico. We will be at sea in the relatively calm waters of the Sea of Cortez aboard a small whale watching boat designed to carry up to 15 people. Exact dates have yet to be confirmed. Our primary goal is to see one of the world’s most endangered species of marine mammals, the Blue Whale. Other opportunities along the way include whale watching for other species such as fin and humpback, snorkeling in search of the Sea of Cortez Angel fish, and exploring the desert islands of Baja with their extraordinary cactus forests. While details are still to be ironed out, this will give you a preliminary idea. We will be at sea for 7 to 8 days, and the approximate cost will be $2,500 per person not including airfare.

JUNE 2001
Exploring the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska.

A Photographers dream! Here is your opportunity for a leisurely paced trip with only a few other people to search for humpback and killer whales, brown and black bears, nesting bald eagles, wildflowers, icebergs and glaciers, puffins, otters and so much more. At this writing, details are not confirmed but for your planning purposes we are looking at a 10 day trip in the last two weeks of June. The approximate cost will be $3,500 per person excluding air fare.

A journey through coastal Alaska always reminds me of a quote
by Henry David Thoreau
"In wildness is the preservation of the soul."

Further into the future, we are researching the possibility of trips for 2001
to 80° North, Svalbard Norway, in search of polar bears, icebergs, glaciers tundra, wildflowers and other polar wildlife.
And a return to both Alaska and the Sea of Cortez!

As you know, one of our ideas with these trips is to limit the number of people so that you have the opportunity to experience the environment as close to alone as possible! Another objective is to allow you to have quality time with the wilderness and the species of wildlife and plants you have come to learn about.

With very few people for us to help….
Brad will always be available to help you with your personal photography questions or concerns. Susan will always be available to help you with identification and understanding natural history topics. Together we will be Expedition Leaders to personally guide you to the best possible locations for all of your interests.

News on Brad

Most of you have been following Brad’s current change in career. He now has a 100 ton Master’s license, and is Relief Captain for two 80 foot wooden schooners that he helped build. One (Adirondack) is sailing out of Chelsea Piers, Manhattan, and the other (Adirondack II) is out of Newport RI. He bounces between the two places, but if you should find yourself in one of those places, see if Brad is on board and go for a sail with him! (Hint: Even for us nature lovers, the Manhattan skyline is amazing on their sunset cruises!) He is also having a great deal of success with his photography. He has been signed with a large stock agency, Animals Animals / Earth Scenes, and has sold quite a few prints and also some illustrations for brochure copy!

News on Susan

Her book (My Antarctica Journal, written and illustrated by Susan) is still in the hands of publishers in Argentina. She still visits hundreds of school children in her non-ship time. Her latest project is a combined effort with Allied Whale (College of the Atlantic) and the International Whaling Commission to document individuals and the sightings of individual humpback whales in the Antarctic Peninsula. This is an opportunity for Citizen Science, which is a growing way of assisting scientists world wide.
