WINGS
OF MAGIC
The
Secret Lives of Butterflies and Moths
Butterflies and moths represent the magic that is life on
this planet. They often begin life as a mere speck of color
that is barely recognizable to the human eye! Hatching into
caterpillars, through the phases of their life cycles they
become massive eating machines, seemingly feeding non-stop
during daylight hours. Then in a mysterious transformation
process they hide in safe cocoons, only to metamorphose
into some of the most interesting creatures on earth . .
. butterflies and moths. In this phase some adult butterflies
live for only 10 days, frantically looking for a place to
breed and lay eggs . . . others migrate thousands of miles
south, then return thousands of miles north the following
year to breed and die! This program will introduce your
students to the fascinating connection between butterflies
and moths and the plants that are required to provide them
with life. A study of butterflies and moths will help your
students understand the connection that plants have to animals
and of course, animals have to plants. Using our local monarch
butterfly as an example, students will understand how important
it is for the international connections that are now being
made between people and their governments to help protect
vital environments that provide habitats for insects both
beautiful and cryptically camouflaged.
THE
PROGRAM: by Susan Adie, Nature's Storyteller
Susan has studied the natural history of fascinating
life forms of the world for 30 years. Her unique style of
storytelling, incorporating her experiences with the natural
history of butterflies and moths, will supplement your students'
biological science curricula. Susan will bring an amazing
display of some of the world's butterflies and moths for
your students to closely examine. A colorful slide show
will illustrate Wings of Magic, The Secret Lives of Butterflies
and Moths.

for 2002 - 2003
Ancient Mariners
The Secret Lives of Sea Turtles
Sea turtles represent some of the most ancient life forms
found on earth. Their earliest fossil remains date back
150 million years! At that time they navigated our oceans
in untold millions. Estimates for the Caribbean Sea alone
ranged up to 660,000,000. (Six hundred and sixty million!)
Sea turtles come in many different sizes, shapes and colors.
The olive Ridley is usually less than 100 pounds, while
the Leatherback typically ranges from 650 to 1,300 pounds!
The upper shell, or carapace, of each sea turtle species
is distinctive in length, color, shape and arrangement of
scales. Sea turtles do not have teeth, but their jaws have
modified "beaks" suited to their particular diet. They do
not have visible ears, but have eardrums covered by skin.
They hear best at low frequencies, and their sense of smell
is excellent. Their vision underwater is good, but they
are nearsighted out of water. Their streamlined bodies and
large flippers make them remarkably adapted to life at sea.
However, sea turtles maintain close ties to land. Females
must come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand; therefore,
all sea turtles begin their lives as tiny hatchlings on
land.
THE
PROGRAM: by Susan Adie, Nature's Storyteller
Susan has studied the natural history of the world's most
fascinating life forms for 30 years. Her unique form of
storytelling incorporates her experiences with the natural
history of sea turtles, and will supplement and enhance
your students' biological science studies. The display features
an amazing collection of some of the world's sea turtles
that your students can closely examine. The slide show features
a collection of award winning photographers' work who specialize
in nature's subjects.
Endangered
Species
Since 1972, the Endangered Species Act has been an attempt
to protect the world's diminishing natural resources. Yet
, many of us are unaware of the details of endangerment.
Why do plants and animals appear on this list? Susan will
explain how our everyday wants and needs have affected more
than 40,000 plant and animal species. Using a number of
leopard skins, stuffed sea turtles, large snake skins and
other artifacts, students will graphically understand the
problem and the possible solutions. (With small enough groups,
there is a "Hands On" opportunity with this program.)
Classroom connections:
Motivational, environmental understanding and social science.
Arctic
Wilderness... the Land, Wildlife and People
"
I walked along on top of a canopy of 2" high willow
trees. Tundra flowers dotted the landscape, blending with
the scent of walrus blubber cooking." Susan has been
exploring wild arctic communities of Siberia, Alaska, Canada
and Greenland for the past seven summers. Using slides,
storytelling and a collection of artifacts, this program
will give you a closer look into the lives of the tundra
landscape, its wildlife and people.
Classroom connections:
Regions of the world and Studies of Native People.
Children
of the Rainforest
"The
Choco Indian children share their forest home with boa constrictors,
parrots, monkeys, bats and jaguars. Their forest is one
of the most endangered rainforests on earth...." Through
this program your students will journey up the Sambu River
to visit the Darien Jungle of Panama. Colorful slides that
Susan has gathered in her numerous visits to the forest
illustrate the wildlife found in and under the forest canopy.
Classroom connections:
Central American Studies and Forest Ecosystems.
Penguin
Power
"This
is the fastest swimming bird in the world! But it cannot
fly! Some of the water it swims through is colder that ICE!"
Journey to the bottom of the earth with Susan to explore
the ice world of penguins of the Southern Ocean. Using award-winning
slides and unusual props, your students will explore the
adaptations for living in one of the most inhospitable environments
in the world.
Classroom connections:
World Biomes, Animal adaptations, Geography and World
Explorers.
Amazon
Adventure
Travel with Susan from the Atlantic Ocean to the source
of the Amazon. Meet the river people and the wildlife of
the largest rainforest on earth. Susan will combine stories
of her adventures, native myths and artifacts with award-winning
slides to explore this mighty river with your students.
To
facilitate reaching a larger audience this program can be
presented in the following manner: A large assembly program
which will serve as an introduction to the adventure, followed
by smaller presentations on either Myth and Legends of the
River-forest People and/or Amazonas Wildlife.
Classroom connections: Cultures of the world, current events
and plant
and animal adaptations.
Animal Tales... A Storytelling Event!
Tradtional
myths and legends are how the First People explain their
world. Borrowing from that tradition, Susan will entertain
your students with the magic of ancient stories featuring
Walrus, Raven, Anaconda, Sea turtles and more.
In this program Susan will share her original story, How
Puffin Got Her Colors.
Classroom connections:
Communication skills and creative writing.
Bears

transport your students to the tundra trails of polar bears,
the Alaskan wilderness of the brown bear, and to our own
backyards where black bears roam the eastern forest.
Classroom connections:
Animal adaptations, studies of native people.
Gone
Whaling... Gentle Giants of the Sea
From
pole to pole, Susan has been following the path of her ancestors,

however, that is trying to protect these magnificent creatures.
Stories of her experiences at sea will help your students
understand the nature of these marine giants.
Classroom connections:
